The list of AR-15 upgrades can be pretty long, so we want to focus on things that affect ease of use, recoil, weight, length, and other major usability factors before we get into a lot of the granular stuff.

These can be important components, but they're also niche and situational at best, so we've chosen to address things that are more ubiquitous.

We're also not going to be granular enough to start talking about an update to the charging handle or the release of the bolt. We will only stick to the "top" pick from each product line, instead of providing a list for each. I will go into more detail about why I chose the products I did, although, if you are still learning about these things, you will have more insight into the factors to consider with each of these upgrades.

Defensive Ar 15 Setup For Regular People

When looking at barrels, either as a replacement or for a new build, you need to weigh the pros and cons of shorter barrels, mid-length barrels, and long barrels. The longer the barrel, the more accuracy and muzzle velocity, but the gun is more clumsy and heavy.

With a shorter barrel, it's easier to find a case and store an AR-15 in a small space, such as a compartment in a car or truck. All things being equal, an AR-15 equipped with a shorter barrel will also weigh less than one with a medium or long barrel. Anyone who says length doesn't matter clearly hasn't experimented with barrels of different lengths.

Faxon is my personal choice because it has the best of two different barrel profile sizes: ruler and pencil. The government profile gives you durability and strength, while the pencil barrel profile towards the end of the barrel gives you some weight savings and handling.

You don't have to get Faxon as a mid-length, but unless you have a special reason to want a long or short barrel, I recommend it. Faxon produces excellent quality stainless steel barrels. A new barrel is one of the fastest ways to adjust the length of your AR-15, improve accuracy, and even help with recoil.

For the most part, it's easier than you think to upgrade your barrel or simply replace the barrel with another barrel. That's one of the great things about the AR-15 platform; change something as an integral as a barrel is actually quite easy; almost as easy as changing simple accessories on another weapon platform.

The instructions are easy to find online and as long as you follow them carefully, you don't have to worry too much about it and you'll be back in no time. With other gun platforms, changing the barrel may not be possible, and if it is, it can take an incredible amount of time.

Superlative Arms comes in all standard sizes with a fantastic low profile gas block. Having a low profile gas system is a great way to ensure you can accommodate any optics you want to install. Gas tubes and gas blocks get incredibly hot when firing, and Superlative Arms has built a solid gas system that can take a lot of heat, even when you're shooting fast.

One of the main reasons this is my pick for the best AR-15 upgrade is that you can adjust the amount of gas released. This is great to ensure you only absorb the recoil to the point that you need to reliably cycle the action, and the excess recoil can be reduced a little by letting some gas escape.

This is something that varies from gun to gun, so you'll want to take your gun out for a day and adjust it to fit the AR-15.

This BCG will not work for every caliber you can fit your AR-15, but it will work for many of them, and it will work for a lot more if you change the bolt and keep the mount. If you make the standard .223 / 5.56 version, this BCG will work perfectly. You can get BCG for more money if you want, but this is the best option.

At the risk of being too "out there", I'll go with the Franklin Armory BFSIII AR-C1 binary trigger.

This is one of those enhancements where it's really hard to say "the best" instead of "my personal favorite". Compared to many other trigger options, the BFSIII is very expensive. If all you need is a single base stage with a clean break, it can be had for about 1/5 the price of BFSIII.
