Die Hard Guns

The 1988 action film stars Bruce Willis as John McClane, a New York City cop who visits his estranged wife in Los Angeles on Christmas Eve. While Nakatomi is in the square, bandits/terrorists crash the party and McClane tries to disrupt their plans and rescue the hostages.

The film, starring a then-untried TV star, catapulted Willis to stardom and the film was a commercial and box office success, inspiring a new genre of action film.

John McTiernan's direction, Jeb Stewart's excellent script and excellent performances make for a classic genre film. A notable contribution was Alan Rickman's portrayal of McClane's nemesis Hans Gruber in the film.

The first piece of the collection is John McClane's NYPD badge and credentials. It was one of two sets made for the production, however it was never seen on screen.

Drafts of the script called for McClane to flash his signal at the beginning of the film to a nearby passenger on the plane. In the shot scene, he instead slips his Beretta into a shoulder holster under his jacket.

This is one of the original prop sets made by the famous "Hand Prop Room" and is on display and archived in a shadow box with other pieces. Simon Lee of DieHardProps.com acquired this collection directly from Die Hard Property Master Tommy Tomlinson.

NYPD I.D. Mark number "881" on a leather case created for the character of John McClane (Bruce Willis). It is one of two made for the film. This was used on set, while the other was later sent to the studio in case inserts were needed. ID CARD. And the badge is used in a scene near the beginning of the film where John McClane shows it to a passenger on a plane. After that the scene was cut from the film.

The second of the two badges sold for about $10,000 at Christie's "Film and Entertainment Collectibles" sale in New York in June 1996.

The second part of the collection was used in several scenes in the film John McClane's Zippo Lighter. This is one of two zZppo lighters supplied for production.

This is one of the many HK/MP5L machine guns that Bruce Willis built and used in Die Hard for John McClane as well as several terrorists. This version of the machine gun was useless and was made from molded rubber parts for stunt scenes.

This track was obtained from The Golden Closet, who made the track available from Michael Papak, Weapons Specialist on Die Hard and Assistant Property Master on Lethal Weapon and Lethal Weapon 2.

Gun Control: How California Got Tough

This non-firing machine gun has the rare distinction of being used by the main characters in two of the most popular action movie franchises, "Die Hard" and "Lethal Weapon". The gun mount is made of dense rubber and molded from an actual Heckler Koch MP5L 9mm machine gun and attaches to an adjustable shoulder strap.

The prop was also used in the first two Lethal Weapon movies by Martin Riggs (played by Mel Gibson) in Lethal Weapon 2.

This type of weapon is used throughout Die Hard, as McClane carries one after taking it from a terrorist at the beginning of the film. After dispatching the villain, "Now I have a machine gun, ho ho ho!" McClane sends him to the elevator to send a message to Hans Gruber and others, writing. In a terrorist sweater.

A third piece of the collection is Hans Gruber's Kenwood Radio which is used extensively throughout the film. The use of these radios, which allow McClane to communicate with both Gruber and Powell, is an important part of the film and allows the isolated McClane to "share scenes" with other characters in the film.

This piece can be traced back to a 1997 Sotheby's auction. It remained in a private collection until October 2008, when it was auctioned along with other pieces sold in the market since the 1997 Sotheby's event. I also found that the antenna is not original to the product, but a replacement.

Although it contains no studio documents, the 1997 date is significant because of the research tools available at the time. Given the limitations of video analysis in the late 1990s, very little detail can be found by examining film and reviewing still images.

In late 2007, the Die Hard films were released on Blu-ray Disc in high definition, 1080×1920 resolution. Also, a study of the film revealed many details about the radios used by John McClane, Hans Gruber and other characters throughout the film.

As seen in the following collections, the McClain radio has a distinctive black "Kenwood" on a white background, while the Gruber radio has no such label on the back.

Part of this collection is the Gruber-style radio back fit. There are many other differences between the two radio styles, and this example matches the Gruber stills in any case.

In an extreme close-up of Gruber's radio on his desk, the piece has a distinct, deep cut in the metal face of the front that can match the screen. Given the off-the-shelf nature of the track and the lack of direct source material leading up to its production, the placement of the radio in the film is critical.

As seen in this comparison – the same again from a Blu-ray disc versus a DVD – the ability to find and confirm a single scratch on metal was not previously available:

There are a few other "possible" screen mappings, but I'd have to classify them as incomplete at this point.

As Harry Ellis uses Gruber's radio in a critical scene, this radio also matches the actor's (Hart Bockner) handling of the scene.

In the first three films of the franchise (Die Hard, Die Hard 2, Die Hard with a Vengeance), John McClane's trademark weapon is the Beretta.

This piece is one of four empty Beretta 92FS pistols that were rented for the production of Die Hard with a Vengeance ("Simon Says Productions"). The armorer for this film is Weapons Specialists Ltd., New York.
