Marine Fighter Attack Squadron (VMFA) 314 at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, Calif., said its F-35Cs have reached initial operational capability, or IOC, clearing the aircraft for worldwide deployment, according to a service announcement.

"The F-35 is a strategic deployment that extends the reach of our Navy and our systems and increases our ability to support allies and partners at short notice," said Maj. Gen. Christopher Mahoney, commanding general of the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, in a statement.

"Through the effective use of the F-35, the [Marine Air-Ground Task Force] has the ability to control our adversaries on the battlefield, in the air and at sea."
Officials said several standards must be met before an aircraft can reach the IOC, including a minimum number of Marines trained to fly and support combat operations.
The military's first F-35C arrived in January; Officials said in March at the time that VMFA-314, known as the "Black Knights," had achieved the highest level of "flight safety," bringing the unit one step closer to deployment. Officials did not respond to questions about how many F-35Cs are currently in the force.
The Marine Corps was the first to build an impressive number of F-35s. Its newly developed F-35B was the first to achieve IOC in 2015, ahead of the Navy and Air Force.

In 2018, the F-35B made its first strike, conducting its first strike in Afghanistan. The F-35B first deployed aboard the USS Wasp and Marine Expeditionary Unit 31 in the Pacific in March 2018, marking the aircraft's first operational deployment.
The Air Force F-35A arrived at IOC in 2016. The Aircraft Fighter Squadron (VFA) 147 "Argonauts" from Naval Air Station Lemoore, Calif., arrived at IOC last year when they completed qualifications on the Carl Vinson aircraft. VFA-147 — the first F-35C service squadron — is scheduled to make its first flight on the Vinson in 2021.
Of the three types of Joint Strike Fighter, the F-35C made by Lockheed Martin can carry the most fuel in it - nearly 20,000 pounds - which allows it to last longer. It can also be loaded onto aircraft, which "allows the Navy to operate its ships at a safe distance from the threat while its fighters engage distant targets," according to the defense company.
"The unique capability of the F-35C, compared to the F-35B and legacy aircraft, gives the Marine Corps an additional advantage in the combat and operational capability of U.S. Marine aircraft," said Lt. Col. Duncan French, special officer VMFA-314, on release.

"In addition to receiving and inspecting the many aircraft that have arrived throughout the year, the Marines have maintained a high level of aircraft readiness," he said. "Those aircraft may be operated which enable pilots to train in the necessary missions required by the IOC [and] contribute to the training of the IOC."
VMFA-314 is also a team of historic firsts: It was the first squadron in the Department of the Navy to upgrade the F/A-18 Hornet jet in the 1980s.
Additionally, the squadron was the first to replace the F-4B Phantom ground attack aircraft in 1961; and the "Black Knights" were the first members of the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing to transition to fighter aircraft in 1952 and flew the F-9F Panther.
"The Black Knights' successful transition to the F-35C culminates in this statement from the IOC, which is a confirmation of the distinguished legacy of the pioneer of new aircraft," said Lt. Col. Brendan Walsh, Commanding Officer VMFA-314.

The US Marine Corps' first F-35C variant Joint Strike Fighter squadron has reached a new milestone, fully equipped for worldwide airlift and warfare operations.
With the ship's deployment expected sometime next year, Marine Fighter Attack Squadron (VMFA) 314 at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, Calif., said this week that its F-35Cs have reached maximum capability, meaning they are ready for combat , according to a release.

"Many hours were spent maintaining aircraft, launching and repairing aircraft at Miramar, elsewhere, and onboard to conduct the necessary training to achieve these goals," said Maj. . Derek Heinz, an operations officer with the team, said in the release. "The Marines of VMFA-314 have gained the confidence to fly this aircraft and are confident we can do it in combat when called upon."
The military's first F-35C arrived in January 2020; Officials said in March at the time that the team, known as the "Black Knights," had reached its "flight safety" milestone, bringing the unit one step closer to being organized.
In December 2020, the unit said it had reached its minimum operational capability, known as initial capability, meaning the unit has a minimum number of Marines trained to fly and support five generations.
The Marine Corps did not say how many F-35Cs it currently has, but the service planned to buy 67 F-35Cs for transport operations, according to the USMC's 2019 Aviation Plan. But senior officials indicated that number could change in the coming years , depending on the number of pilots and aircraft manufacturers.

The Marine Corps first achieved many milestones of the F-35, but unlike the F-35C variant, its sister model the F-35B did not reach full performance. Each service sets its own requirements for operational capability based on a number of factors, including the level of training of available personnel and the number of flight control points.
Its newly developed F-35B was the first to receive basic approval in 2015, ahead of the Navy and Air Force. In 2018, the F-35B made its first strike, conducting its first strike in Afghanistan. The F-35B first deployed aboard the USS Wasp with Marine Expeditionary Unit 31 in the Pacific in March 2018, marking the aircraft carrier's first operational deployment.
In May, F-35B fighters from Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 211 at Marine Corps Air Station Yuma, Arizona, joined their British counterparts to form the largest fifth generation ever seen aboard Britain's Queen Elizabeth.
Meanwhile, the Air Force's F-35A hit its lowest operational level in 2016. The Air Force also didn't show its usual announcement that the aircraft is ready for war.
